The Board’s policy is for a majority of directors to be independent. This is currently the case.
Juliann Byron - Chairman

Juliann has extensive experience in the accounting and finance fields. She provided corporate secretarial, management and governance consulting services over many years, and is a non‑executive director on public and not-for-profit company boards.

Juliann is a member of the Finance Committee, Staff Committee and the Audit and Governance Committee. As Chairman, she also attends other committee meetings as required.

Bob Stensholt - Deputy Chairman

Bob has had an extensive career in public service, including roles as a teacher, diplomat, Assistant Director General for AusAID and over 10 years as the state Member of Parliament for Burwood. Bob now consults to various boards and authorities on governance matters.

Bob chairs the Community Investment and Marketing Committee, and is a member of the Finance Committee and the Events Committee.

Dick Menting - Director

Dick was the foundation Chairman of Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance Ltd and previously spent 35 years in retail banking, finance and administration with a major bank and other companies. Dick recently retired as a councillor for Boroondara City Council and continues to run a local small business.

Dick is a member of the Finance Committee, Community Investment and Marketing Committee, and the Events Committee.

Damien Hudson - Director

Damien has over 10 years’ experience in local real estate. More recently, Damien established businesses provided management services to community organisations.

Damien chairs the Events Committee, and is a member of the Community Investment and Marketing Committee.

Leigh Smith - Director

Leigh is a director and shareholder in several Melbourne and country Victoria motor vehicle dealerships. He has extensive experience in sales and marketing, management, human resources and contractual arrangements.

Leigh chairs the Staff Committee, and is a member of the Community Investment and Marketing Committee and the Audit and Governance Committee.


Gordon McFarlane - Director and Treasurer

Gordon was an executive at Melbourne Water, where he worked in financial, contract management and governance roles. Gordon commenced as the Treasurer of Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance Ltd after the 2012 AGM, having formerly been the chair of the Audit and Governance Committee.

Gordon chairs the Finance Committee. He also attends the Audit and Governance Committee meetings as a non-voting guest.

Daizy Maan - Director

Daizy was appointed to the Board in 2015. Daizy has considerable experience working with and for youth organisations, particularly those with an entrepreneurial or social enterprise focus. She is currently studying commerce and law and making a meaningful contribution to the community through her involvement. Daizy was the Boroondara Young Citizen of the Year in 2015.

Daizy is the Chairman of the Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance Limited Youth Advisory Committee.

Andrew Whittaker - Director

Andrew has over 40 years’ experience in a variety of professional services and senior executive roles. He was formerly a partner with PwC and Ferrier Hodgson and has worked across a variety of industry sectors, including banking, providing performance improvement and governance advice.

Andrew is a member of the Finance Committee and is Chairman of the Community Investment and Marketing Committee.

Our Staff
Nick Coker - Senior Manager

Nick has been the Senior Manager for Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance Ltd since 2009, managing banking operations across all four branches. Nick is a career banker, having come to the Community Bank® network from one of the major banks. Nick drives the business plans for each branch in conjunction with each manager, and leads the community engagement programs.

Nick  attends all Board meetings and also attends committee meetings as required.

Nick Azar - Business Development Manager

Nick is one of two Business Development Managers. He can visit customers at their business or home to discuss their business banking or residential lending needs, including after hours and on weekends. Contact Nick on 0402 11 783 or .

His role is also to help build strong partnerships and improve relationships with our many community groups.

Anna Gration - Marketing Manager

Anna is the Marketing Manager supporting our four Community Bank® branches. Anna joined our team at the beginning of 2016 after many years in various senior Marketing and Partnership Management roles. Contact Anna on 0411 326 908 or

Ashburton Village Festival- a celebration of community

The Ashburton Community Bank® were the proud Major Sponsor of the Ashburton Village Twilight Festival. An estimated 12,000 people enjoyed the summer sunshine and the great variety of activities on offer. Piggy was busy entertaining festival goers and enjoying time on the Ashburton Community Bank® stage. The Festival provided a great opportunity for the community to enjoy the vibrant Ashburton Village and wander down the normally busy
High st.

Supporting children to reach their full potential

We are very proud to support Learning for Life Autism Centre in Balwyn. The centre aims to assist children with autism to reach their full potential regardless of their financial circumstances. Adam Osmani and Dot Tamburrini from the Balwyn Community Bank® branch recently presented Mary Muirhead from Learning for Life with a $5,500 cheque to support their annual fundraising ball.

The Surrey Hills Community Bank® branch is pleased to have established a relationship with Roberts McCubbin Primary School in Box Hill South. Branch Manager, Maggie Stamoulis recently presented school Principal Marg Pickburn and Fair coordinator Britta with a cheque for the school’s upcoming Family Fun Fair. The Surrey Hills Community Bank® Branch is looking forward to the Fair and to building a great working relationship with the school.

Music Festival in Surrey Hills

The Surrey Hills Community Bank® branch is a proud major sponsor of the Surrey Hills Music Festival. Held in November, the main event day was blessed with glorious sunshine and a large crowd enjoyed a huge variety of music and great food offered by local Union Rd traders. We have a strong relationship with the Festival organising committee and have provided support of more than $27,000 to this event over
recent years.

New equipment for Cricket Club

Sunday 29th January was a special day at the Bulleen Cricket Club. Life Members were invited to present the Most Valuable Player awards to current players and Surrey Hills Community Bank® branch Manager, Maggie Stamoulis presented President, Neil Henry with a sponsorship cheque for $4,000. The Community Bank® has a strong relationship with the club and its members. Sponsorship funds will be used to purchase new equipment and subsidise fees for junior players.

On the road with Camcare

Chairman Juliann Byron and Senior Manager Nick Coker representing the Ashburton Community Bank® branch joined staff and volunteers at Camcare at their recent Christmas gathering. Camcare play a crucial role in our community supporting people through times of adversity including unemployment, ill health, financial stress and hardship, relationship difficulties, homelessness and security issues. We are pleased to have been able to provide funds to allow Camcare to purchase a motor vehicle for use by staff and volunteers.

Cricket club supporting breast cancer awareness

Maggie Stamoulis, Manager of the Surrey Hills Community Bank® branch was a guest of Mont Albert Cricket Club at their recent Ladies Luncheon. Funds were raised for the McGrath Foundation for their important work in Breast Cancer awareness and research. The event was well attended and full of energy and support for a great cause. Maggie also presented a cheque to the Club President Peter Knox for $1,000 in recognition of a club member banking with the Surrey Hills Community Bank®.

Team effort supporting local events

Kindergarten benefits from community banking

Kathy Koulouris, Manager from the Ashburton Community Bank® branch recently attended the Rowen St Kindergarten to present a cheque to the Committee President. We provided support for the Annual Rowen Street fun day held in October and an incentive payment for a kindergarten family who has recently taken out a home loan with the Ashburton Community Bank® Branch.

Celebrating $3 million in Community Contributions

The Annual General Meeting of Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance was recently held at the Evergreen Centre in Balwyn. Shareholders and representatives from our community groups, joined Directors and staff from the Canterbury, Ashburton, Balwyn and Surrey Hills Community Bank® branches to celebrate the $3 million milestone. The four Community Bank® branches have provided more than $3 million back to the local community in sponsorship, grants and incentives through the Community Investment Program.
