The supply of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) by the Canterbury Community Bank® branch in the Maling Road shopping precinct has proved to be a life saver.
The defibrillator which is located at Buckley’s IGA was used last week after a man suffered a heart attack in Maling Road. CPR was commenced by an off-duty doctor who was in the vicinity of the patient. Bystanders went to the Community Bank® and then to the IGA to retrieve the defibrillator. The defibrillator was used, sending an electrical shock to the patient’s heart to reset the heart rhythm. The patient was transported to hospital where he continues to recover.
According to St Johns Ambulance Australia, the application of a defibrillator within minutes increases the persons survival rate. Without defibrillation, for every minute that passes the chance of survival is reduced by 10%.
We have purchased defibrillators for each of the shopping precincts where our branches are located and for several sporting clubs and community organisations in the local community.
We provide defibrillators to many community organisations in the hope they will never need to be used, however we know they save lives as demonstrated last week in Maling Road.
